Bird Song

This is the second piece of my six part series for 2026. It is entitled, "Bird Song." It was completed within about 13 sessions of various lengths. It's working title was "Breathe", but I changed it to "Bird Song" when I felt inspired by a leaf that I had painted solid in iridescent bronze. It looked like a bird to me. The painting really only started to come together when I arrived at this direction for a singing bird. Little birds singing has been such a beautiful encouragement to me lately, it just seemed natural to go in this direction. Of all the circles I had painted, I got the idea to turn some of them into musical notes as though they were floating through the air. In the bottom left hand corner there was something that just happened to look like a door, and then I added the only window there is in the entire piece, which was very much a defining moment. Suddenly the work had structure, vision. I painted it just like I saw it in my imagination. There is something so wonderful about an open window. I always imagine such amazing fresh air coming in from outside. And all the sounds! In this case, all of the bird song floating in on the breeze, lightening one's heart and spirit. One can't help but to breathe so deeply from the bottom of one's lungs and then experience such peace. Several moments that were foundational in the beginning ultimately were painted out with the white parchment paint mixed with titanium white. Truly this colour addition alone in a colour blocking style cemented the entire feeling of the work as it created places throughout where the eye could rest. It has become a tapestry of sorts which I love so much. It feels old, although the style of it is not old at all, like it's reaching back in time to grab hold of what has always been worth holding onto and carrying it into the future.
