Stopping Traffic

Project type

Painting - 30" x48", Mixed media on canvas, Private Collection.

Date

June 2025

This piece has so many lives I can't almost keep them straight. This rendition started with a wash of black over the white wash and texture that was already there. It was going to be dark and moody but apparently I keep ending up with hopeful. The name for this came very early on. The canvas was quite black with only large circles of paint right from the tube. They looked like headlights on a dark road, multiple vehicles all stopped at once as if suddenly looking at something amazing that just appeared in front of them. I wanted to keep an urban feel though so along came the skyscrapers. You can see the remnant of them on the right in the full picture. The floating windows came next and then the organic feel with the flowers. I love how they mix and with all the colour it became joyful in no time flat. It was something else before, but now that is gone with something new having arrived at the same time it hasn't totally lost its history. It's that history that shaped it in the first place. The layers make it wonderful.
